Artificial intelligence continues to expand its presence in users’ daily lives around the world. One of the most in-demand applications is AI chatbots — virtual companions capable of generating text, answering questions, automating customer service, and even writing code.

The global AI chatbot market is experiencing rapid growth. According to Research and Markets, the market is expected to reach 15.6 billion US dollars by the end of 2024, up from 2.5 billion US dollars in 2021, with the number of users surpassing 1.5 billion. By 2029, the market is projected to grow to 46.6 billion US dollars. Digital assistants such as ChatGPT by OpenAI, Perplexity, Microsoft’s Copilot, Google’s Gemini, China’s DeepSeek, and Anthropic’s Claude are already becoming integral to business processes, education, customer service, and everyday communication.

According to Statcounter Global Stats, ChatGPT remained the world’s most popular AI chatbot as of May this year, holding a 79.8% market share. With 400 million active users, this dominance is not surprising. ChatGPT’s website and mobile apps attract around 5 billion visits per month. Perplexity — developed as an alternative to traditional search engines — also holds a significant market share at 11.8%. Microsoft’s Copilot (5.2%) and Google’s Gemini (2%) maintain notable positions as well.

DeepSeek and Claude account for 0.8% and 0.5% of the market respectively.

Meanwhile, the issue of privacy and data collection remains one of the most pressing concerns in the field of AI chatbots. Most users give little thought to what happens with the information they input.

According to Surfshark, Gemini collects the most user data — 22 data categories, including contact information, location, contacts list, user content, history, identifiers, diagnostics, usage data, purchases, and more. Claude and Copilot follow, collecting 13 and 12 categories of user data, respectively.

Turning to Kazakhstan, ChatGPT leads the market by a wide margin, accounting for 94.5% of AI chatbot usage as of May 2025. It is followed by Perplexity (2.8%), Microsoft Copilot (1.2%), and Google Gemini (1%). DeepSeek and Claude hold smaller shares of 0.3% and 0.2%, respectively.

The most common reasons for using AI chatbots are finding answers instead of using traditional search engines and receiving on-demand explanations — each cited by 35% of users.

Another 23% use AI chatbots for writing, rewriting, or editing texts as part of task completion. It is worth noting that only 10% of respondents use AI assistants for code generation, while 12% use them as translation tools.

In the business context, usage patterns differ: 41% of companies deploy AI chatbots for sales purposes, and 37% use them for customer interaction.
