The volume of retail trade in the first half of 2025 reached 10.1 trillion tenge — 15.7% higher in monetary terms than in the same period of the previous year (Volume Index — 106.6%). A year earlier, growth was recorded at 12.3% (Volume Index — 105.6%).

The share of retail in the total volume of domestic trade has been recovering for the third year in a row: it increased from 31.7% in January–June 2024 to 32.2% in January–June 2025.

In the structure of retail trade, almost 70% (compared to 69.4% a year earlier) accounted for non-food products: 7 trillion tenge, growth in monetary terms — 16.5%. Food products accounted for 3 trillion tenge, with an annual growth of 13.8%.

Individual entrepreneurs, including those trading in markets, accounted for 27.6% of the total volume of retail trade, or 2.8 trillion KZT for January–June of this year — 20.8% more than in the same period of 2024.

A year earlier, the share of individual entrepreneurs in retail trade was 26.4% — lower than in the current year. Five years ago, individual entrepreneurs accounted for 39%, and a decade ago — an impressive 46.6%.

In regional terms, the largest volumes of retail trade traditionally fell on Almaty and Astana: 3.2 trillion and 1.4 trillion KZT. Next are Karaganda (732.4 billion KZT) and East Kazakhstan (574.5 billion KZT) regions, as well as Shymkent (539.3 billion KZT).

It is worth noting that in four regions of Kazakhstan, more than half of the retail trade volume was accounted for by individual entrepreneurs (IE): in East Kazakhstan — 68.7%, in Abai — 59%, in Kyzylorda — 56%, in North Kazakhstan — 52.9%. A significant share of IE in retail trade was also recorded in Karaganda (45.4%) and Ulytau (42.8%) regions.

The lowest share of IE in retail trade was observed in Almaty and Almaty region: only 12% and 13.5%, respectively. Next are Aktobe (16.2%) and Zhetysu (18.4%) regions.
